(pronounced ah-sigh-ee) It has been said the this little purple berry contains a more concentrated dose of anti-oxidants that even the super vegetable known as kale. The acai berry’s carbohydrate-based pulp is considered one of the most perfect sources of energy known to the natural world. But is the acai berry good for weight loss? Probably not. While it’s health benefits cannot be disputed, there is little scientific evidence that acai does anything to increase metabolism or burn fat.

Green Tea Fat Burners. According to the popular health website, WebMD, green tea has the potential to stimulate weight loss. It turns out that green tea contains concentrated amounts of phytochemicals, which are plant-based compounds that cause the body to burn fat and calories. However, the fat burning results only last a few hours, so it makes sense to keep drinking green tea throughout the day.

Appetite Suppressants. These weight loss aids work just the way you would expect – by suppressing your appetite you eat less food, causing your body to lose weight. There are numerous pharmaceutical compounds being advertised as appetite suppressants, including Phentermine (Fastin, Adipex, Ionamin, etc.), Diethylpropion (Tenuate), Rimonabant (Acomplia), and Sibutramine (Meridia, Reductil). The diet pill marketed as Anoretix is one of the more popular appetite suppressants – it actually contains 9 different patented ingredients that include not only an appetite suppressant, but fat blockers, fat burners and carb blockers as well, and it’s available with or without caffeine.

Natural Appetite Suppressants. There are some naturally grown herbs and plants that act as natural appetite suppressants. One of the best known natural appetite suppressants is the Hoodia plant – a member of the cactus family and found growing primarily in South African desert areas. While there are over a dozen different types of Hoodia, Hoodia Gordonii is the only one known to contain the active ingredient p57, which is believed to act as an appetite suppressant.

Fat Blockers. These weight loss supplements work by keeping the body from absorbing all of the fat that you consume. The most effective fat blockers reduce fat absorption by about 25 percent. The popular diet pill known as Alli is a good example of a fat blocker. It contains an ingredient known as Orlistat that attaches to the fat enzymes in your intestines and keeps them from being digested. The undigested fat then passes normally out of your body (which can cause some diarrhea-like side effects that aren’t considered dangerous, but may be a bit unpleasant.)

The Side Effects of Weight Loss Pills. It’s important to remember that natural weight loss pills are not normally evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); meaning that the long term effects of natural diet pills is not always known. Just because the pill contains herbs and plants doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe for long term use.

Prescription Weight Loss Pills. While considered safe since they have been evaluated by the FDA, prescription diet pills can actually carry some of the same risks and side effects as their natural weight loss counter parts. But because prescription weight loss aids are generally prescribed as a last-ditch effort when other weight loss methods have failed, most users consider the risks worth taking. Many of these diet pills contain amphetamines, which can be very addictive, so it’s important that their use is monitored by a doctor. Some of the side effects of amphetamines include increased blood pressure, dry mouth, constipation and insomnia.

Over the Counter Weight Loss Pills are not regulated by the FDA and can often produce side effects that range from unpleasant to downright dangerous. In addition to the potential side effects of amphetamine-based diet pills, other side effects can include: headache, diarrhea, heart irregularities, stomach irritation, nervousness, stroke, heart attack and addiction.
